Kayla and I spend a few days during each school break volunteering at our local food pantry. We’ve spent hours sorting through donation bins dropped off by local grocery stores and stocking shelves in the marketplace pantry.
The work is physical and repetitive. There are no pats on the back or words of praise. Which I really like. It’s exactly as acts of kindness should be. Giving with zero expectation of return. Though of course, the return is massive when it comes to lessons in empathy, awareness and action.
This spring, Walmart has partnered with Feeding America for their Fight Hunger Spark Change program. A movement to not just fight hunger, but to spark conversation and hopefully change in local communities. Unilever is supporting them by donating a meal to Feeding America for every participating Ben & Jerry’s, Knorr and Hellmann’s product purchased with the Fight Hunger label on it.
You can make a difference right now because Walmart will donate $1.00 to Feeding America for every click of support to their Fight Hunger website. So click here and they’ll donate $1.00. Easiest giving back you can do!
We picked up a bunch of items to bring to our local pantry on our next visit. Our basket includes staples like easy to prepare Rice Sides from Knorr and protein packed items like tuna and peanut butter. We also shopped for condiments like Hellmann’s mayonnaise (Best Foods if you’re West Coast, like us) and spices. After staples, these are some of the most requested items to help recipients turn staples into meals.
Then we focused on the kids, choosing squeeze packets of apple sauce and breakfast bars. With spring here and summer on the way, there will be an increased need for breakfast, lunch and snack items for kids. At Kayla’s school, plenty of kids receive free breakfast and lunch. Services that cease during the summer, making it a time of extra need.
With kids on the brain, I instinctively found myself putting cake mix, frosting and candles in our cart. Because all kids deserve to be celebrated, don’t they? Kayla agreed. I could tell it hadn’t occurred to her that plenty of children go without a cake of some sort to mark the occasion. Something that has been an absolute given in her life. And while I’ve seen some of these items on the shelf in the pantry, they’re not a given. Especially the candles.
As we passed the ice cream section, we were both tempted by the Ben & Jerry’s, yet another item bearing the Fight Hunger label and donation. But I gave Kayla a choice. We could treat ourselves to ice cream for doing this, or we could put the money we would have spent on ice cream towards other kids.
A perfect test score could not have made me as proud as the lack of hesitation in declaring that of course we would spent the money on other kids. We added colorful plates, utensils and balloons at the suggestion of a friend. The tiniest of luxuries, capable of bringing huge smiles to a child.
Back at home I shared the art of gift basket creation with Kayla. She wanted to make her own with just the kid stuff. Our local pantry sets us as a neighborhood market and allows families to come, shop and spend their allotted budget of points as they see fit.
There is a little playroom off to the side where kids can push around shopping carts and pretend grocery shop so these baskets would be decorative for now, but live on as shopping baskets later.
Getting involved in the movement to Fight Hunger, Spark Change can be as simple as clicking here to have Walmart donate $1.00 to Feeding America or as involved as giving your time at your local food pantry. No act is too small or too large.
You can find Unilever products with the Fight Hunger label in your local Walmart store, both on special displays and where you’d normally look for them in the aisles.
