Thanks to Nintendo for inviting us to experience #3DSKidForADay I made this Super Mario Bros DIY Cross Body Bag as a fun project to take along.
Kayla and I are taking a mother daughter trip to Nintendo HQ this week in celebration of being a kid. I felt inspired to take a nostalgic piece of Nintendo and give it a modern twist for Kayla. I transformed a plush version of that magnificent coin box many of us remember from childhood and turned it into a cross body bag for Kayla in just a few minutes.
Remember this? It came along with mystery. Would it be filled with coins? A mushroom? Or in this case a candy filled mushroom and a few new games for Kayla’s new 3DS XL to bring on our travels. Making this Super Mario Bros DIY cross body bag is simple and quick. Anyone can do it and you’ll feel like a kid in the process.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- A plush coin box – you’ll want this one.
- Yellow paracord
- A tool like this awl to poke a hole through the plush coin box. It goes without saying to keep this out of reach of little hands!
- Treats to fill your new Super Mario Bros DIY Cross Body Bag with. Here are a few ideas:
- Candy filled mushroom
- Candy filled star
- Nintendo games – my all time favorite is Ni Hao Kai Lan New Year’s Celebration. I learned a few Mandarin words from it myself and there is very little out there to educate on Chinese culture so I was a fan. I bought this way before Kayla started at a Mandarin immersion school when the original DS was popular and now it’s the perfect game for her and still compatible with the 3DS XL
To make my Super Mario Bros DIY cross body bag I used my awl to poke holes one two sides of the plush coin box , right in the center of the question marks. I had to poke it a few times from each side to make the holes big enough for the paracord. Next I eyeballed a piece of paracord I thought would be the right size for Kayla since she was at school. If your child is home you can measure it on their body.
I triple knotted one end of the paracord and slipped it through one of the holes from the inside of the coin box. I brought it around and through the other hole. I tied another triple knot on this side and that was it! This Super Mario Bros DIY was SO cute and kids love having a trinket box to store their precious belongings. If your child is like Kayla then they just LOVE tiny trinkets. So. Many. Trinkets.
And now we’re off to visit Nintendo HQ. You can follow along on Instagram and Twitter! #3DSKidForADay
