I am so excited about #ElenaofAvalor and the role model she will be to my daughter. Thanks to Disney Channel and Latina Bloggers Connect for sponsoring this post.
Have you heard about Elena of Avalor? She’s Disney’s newest princess and not the kind waiting around to be saved by a prince. She’s strong, independent and smart with a side of humor. Which of course is my favorite kind of princess.
Elena of Avalor also happens to be Disney’s first Latina princess which is refreshing and perhaps a bit overdue. If you’re looking at Kayla and wondering where’s the Latina in her, there isn’t any. But you probably wouldn’t look at her and think she is a mixed race child with three religions in her home that speaks conversational Mandarin. She is.
I’m excited for Disney’s first Latina princess because now more than ever it’s up to us as parents to expose our children to other cultures so they can understand and respect them as well as see connections to their own backgrounds.
Living in Southern California, so many of my friends have been waiting for this moment. To give their own daughters a princess who looks like they do. Or as Kayla noted, quite a bit like her own mother does with dark brown hair and dark brown eyes. I’ll take that as a massive compliment and I’d love a referral to Elena’s hairdresser!
Kayla is extra excited for Elena because she just found out that Elena flies around on a jaquin- a mix between a jaguar and a macaw which is considerably cooler than a scooter or my mom SUV. Heck, I want a jaquin. And if Elena looks a bit familiar to you it’s possible that you’ve seen her make appearances in Sophia The First.
Elena of Avalor will premiere on the Disney Channel Friday, July 22 at 7pm EST/6pm CT. If you’re on the left coast like us you may have your choice of watching it at 7pm PST or at 4pm PST if you get the Disney East feed like we do.
Want to learn more about Elena and the rest of the cast? You can check out these videos that give a great background on Elena and join the Elena of Avalor Twitter Party on Thursday, July 21 at 8pm EST/5pm PST. I’ve got a little party planned to celebrate Elena’s arrival and you’d better believe there will be some party setup ideas and DIY projects to see.
